Camels played a vital role opening up vast regions of arid inland Australia. Camels were first introduced into Australia in the 1840’s to assist in the exploration of inland Australia.
Between 1840 and 1920 approximately 20,000 camels and between 2000 and 4000 Cameleers (camel handlers) were imported from India with an estimated 50-65% landed in South Australia.
